Type 1 diabetes is also referred to as juvenile diabetes due to the fact that it is commonly diagnosed in children or teenagers. It is a condition where the patient becomes insulin-dependent for life.

Ian Unger, a six-year-old kid, was diagnosed with this condition at an early age. He has a 24-hour glucose monitor with an insulin pump to manage his diabetes. As much as possible, his parents wanted him to have a normal childhood just like the others in spite of this.

When they made a request to let Ian ride the school bus with his classmates in kindergarten, it was denied. Instead, they were told that he needs to ride the bus alone after the other children were taken to school unless he has a personal aide with him.

His parents felt sad about the school district’s decision. Ian really loves to make friends and interact with other kids, riding a school bus alone would directly affect his social development.

Katrina Christensen, Ian’s mom, wanted to make things better just like any devoted and loving parent would do. The family planted pumpkins and sell them. It was their way to raise a fund for the boy’s personal aide: a medical alert dog.

The family’s simple fundraising project was shared on Facebook and surprisingly, they gained a lot of attention. They run out of pumpkins because of the high demand from interested buyers. Help came pouring in either in funds or by way of donated pumpkins.

They did not think that in just four days, they were able to raise around $23, 000 through their pumpkins and Facebook fundraiser, their target was only $20,000 dollars.

A diabetic alert dog which can detect an irregularity in a person’s blood sugar level and alert them 45 minutes earlier than a glucometer could cost around $25,000. According to Katrina, the dog’s training would typically last for 18 to 24 months. Hopefully, for Ian’s case, his dog will be ready in 10 months’ time.
