Dr. Lincoln Parkes has lived a long and fulfilling life. Now in his 90s, the veteran and former veterinary surgeon has no plans of stopping yet.

Dr. Parkes was 17 years old when he joined the Navy Air Corps near the conclusion of World War II. When the war ended, he and a friend took on odd jobs across the country while they pursued their passion for skiing.

One day, however, Dr. Parkes realized that while it was fun, skiing was not all he wanted to do in life. He liked working with animals on ranches, so he decided to attend veterinary school. Dr. Parkes eventually specialized in neurosurgery and orthopedics.

It was a lucrative career. Dr. Parkes estimates that he saw almost a hundred thousand animal patients a year in the 1950s and 1960s.

Back then, it was common practice to euthanize animals who could no longer walk. However, Dr. Parkes thought that they didn’t deserve to be put down just because they had mobility issues.

The solution was clear — design a unique set of wheels that would help them move around again. Dr. Parkes wandered the streets in search of suitable materials and created the first dog wheelchair.

As soon as Dr. Parkes strapped that cart to his first canine client, the pooch bolted out the door in delight. And that’s how the K-9 Cart Company came to be.

His wheelchairs were in exceedingly high demand. Cats and dogs weren’t the only animals who benefited from Dr. Parkes’ carts. He has also designed wheels for snakes, birds, hamsters, rabbits, and many other creatures.

For the first 20 years of business, K-9 Cart Company was the only maker of customized animal carts. They produced thousands of wheelchairs annually, shipping them nationwide.

Today, the firm has several competitors. According to Dr. Parkes, he hasn’t made a profit in nearly three decades, and his clientele is mostly local now.

K-9 Cart Company’s loyal customers will forever be grateful to Dr. Parkes, though, for helping their pets live their best lives. Also, the slump doesn’t discourage the vet; after all, this is his passion, his life’s work.

In fact, he’s currently busy working on a new cart design. Watch Dr. Parkes with a corgi client here:
